John has been a lifelong horseman and worked at nearly every aspect of the Thoroughbred racing and breeding business.
His experience on the racetrack began in High School as a hot walker and groom, and after graduating from the University of Miami, John was a sports reporter and freelance writer until he started a ten-year career as a jockey agent.
John also worked as a Placing/Patrol Judge and Entry Clerk at Eastern race tracks such as Hialeah, Monmouth, Gulfstream, Garden State, Atlantic City, Pimlico, Laurel, Bowie, Belmont, Aqueduct and Saratoga and in 1978 became one of the first professional racing managers in the US, where he coordinated business affairs for the John Forbes Stable, one of the leading barns in the country.
In 1981, John accepted the position of Vice President and General Manager of Robert Brennan’s Due Process Stables. During his fifteen-year career as principal decision maker, that operation was consistently one of the premier National leaders and raced such champions as DEPUTY MINISTER and DEHERE plus forty-five other individual Stakes winners of ninety Stakes races while breeding two time Eclipse winner OPEN MIND and numerous other superior runners including Graded Stakes horses RAMPAGE, VISIBLE GOLD, EVENING KRIS, SQUAN SONG, BYE UNION AVE.
Responsibilities as General Manager of Due Process included direction of over 200 employees in the racing and breeding operations and the supervision of the building and management of three farms: DPS North, 400+ acres in Colts Neck, NJ used for breeding, raising, sales preparation and training of Thoroughbred race horses; DPS South, 800+ acres near Ocala, Florida, used for breeding, raising, breaking and training and DPS Kentucky, 88 acres in Lexington, KY used for breeding and sales preparation.
Since the Due Process dispersal in 1995, John raced horses, including Stakes horses WILD DEPUTY, DANIEL MY BROTHER, RIVIERA COLLEEN, MERCALDO, ROLLED UP, PHIL THE POWER and MRS PETOSKI.
Other stakes horses which he bred include 1996 Belmont Stakes winner TOUCH GOLD (co-breeder), two times New Jersey champion WARS PROSPECT, Stakes winners ROLLED UP, BULLET BLADE, ROYAL VINDICATION and ALL OF HER TWIST and until 2010, he continued racing and breeding thoroughbreds in the US and Ireland under his own name and with partners under the nom du course Star Stable.
