The Best Racetrack Story since Let It Ride.

Thank you, John Perrotta. Your latest very good read is a public service to many of us who watched the Luck series, degenerate racetrackers and other viewers alike. Milch and Mann brought us a one of a kind set of characters played by a perfectly cast assemblage of great actors … Dustin Hoffman, Dennis Farina, John Ortiz, Nick Nolte, and other memorables.
We are the lucky ones that you decided to use your story telling gifts to give us some relief from the aggravating, nagging itch caused by Luck’s unexpected and abrupt termination, just when the show was gaining traction, momentum and sucking us in.
One of the most appealing things about racing is that it provides closure each time the horses cross the finish line. In the sea of uncertainty (meaning daily life) where many of our tasks and problems are on-going and often have no visible end in sight, you have helped us gain a small measure of closure and comfort by giving us a beginning and a satisfying end.
You breathed new life into some unforgettable characters that many of us once looked forward to each week. Such a motley and interesting group! … and you have successfully continued to make your people totally believable to anyone like me who has spent time around the frontside and the backside. Your many years of living the racetrack scene show through in a fun way in your believable use of taut and often snarky dialogue that co-mingles portrayals of relationships and plot in a way that builds interest and suspense. Plain and simple, Out of Luck is the best track story since Let It Ride.
I love the kaleidoscopic and fast paced but coherent jumping from scene to scene which added pace and texture to my reading.
Your visually appealing and easy to read layout added to my reading pleasure, but nothing contributed to my enjoyment more than Ms. Ferguson’s delightfully wonderful illustrations sprinkled throughout the book.
If anyone has read this far into my review, it must be readily apparent that I give Out of Luck a five star rating. However, if you did not watch the Luck the series when it was aired on HBO, I highly recommend that you watch the full season before reading Mr. Perrotta’s book.
